Geographical Character & Winery Location

The Shingle Peak vineyard and winery is situated in Marlborough, at the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. This location, which is unique in the world, enjoys hot days and cool nights, creating favourable conditions for several grape varieties to deliver intense and distinctive flavours.

Shingle Peak takes its name from a distinctive mountain, nestled in the famous ranges that border the stony alluvial soils of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley.

The vineyard is located on Rapaura Road, on the Wairau plains, about sixteen kilometres west of Blenheim. There are 15 hectares (37 acres) of vineyard area planted, with two main soil types:

WAIRAU

dark, greyish-brown silt loam with brownish grey mottled well drained overlying stony shingle.

RAPAURA    dark brown sand loams, overlying stony shingle layers.
